Introduction
Partial knee replacement surgery is used to address arthritis affecting only one area of the knee joint provided the rest of the knee is not worn. Commonly the inner (medial) side of the knee joint is worn with the outer side of the knee having good cartilage. Good condition of the other compartments is required for the good postoperative results. The knee axis should not be severly deviated („O“ or „X“ knees) either – usually up to 10 degrees. Partial knee replacement is less invasive for the patient than the total knee replacement.

Recovery
Rehabilitation begins on the same day with a range of motion exercises. The day after surgery the patient begins to walk with two crutches and assistence of physiotherapist. The third or fourth day the patient is discharged from the hospital, usually to the stationary physiotherapy. After one week patient begins to walk with one crutch until he/she feels that crutch is not needed anymore.
The patients should come to a follow-up exam in the Clinic six weeks after the surgery, then 3 and 6 months later and after that yearly.
